The Water Resources Board on May 27 approved a change order adding 30 days to a construction contract after contractor excavations encountered unstable soil conditions.
Staff said the design team (SSR, TTL and the contractor Reeds Young) determined the appropriate response was to redesign foundations using micropiles — cast-in-place concrete elements installed into the subsurface to support the structure — to avoid destabilizing adjacent structures. Staff said the time extension was needed to complete the redesign and installation sequencing. The board approved the 30-day extension; staff said the dollar portion of the contract does not change and that the work will come from construction contingencies.
