BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Commission on June 26 adopted a resolution urging the U.S. Congress to add Berkeley County, West Virginia, to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District.
The resolution, read into the record during the consent agenda, cites the county's Civil War sites — including Hooks Run (also rendered in the transcript as "Hoax Run"), Falling Waters, Martinsburg, North Mountain Depot and Bunker Hill — and argues that preservation and interpretation of those sites could enrich quality of life and generate economic returns through heritage tourism.
"Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Berkeley County Commission urges the United States Congress to approve the addition of the County Of Berkeley in West Virginia to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield National Historic District," the resolution text states.
Commissioners said the 1996 congressional designation for eight counties in the Shenandoah Valley left out West Virginia and that inclusion now could open direct federal funding opportunities for battlefield preservation and interpretation. The resolution was moved and seconded as part of the consent agenda and recorded as approved by voice vote.
