Ossining Matters awards $16,363.43 in teacher grants to fund classroom projects

Ossining Matters announced 12 grants totaling $16,363.43 to support classroom projects across the Ossining Union Free School District, the foundation and district leaders told the Board of Education on June 25.
The awards, selected by an Ossining Matters grants committee, are intended to “provide enriching educational opportunities to as many kids as possible,” the committee chair said during the meeting.
Committee members and district staff described the slate of funded projects and amounts. The grants include $1,470.27 to create a calming space at Park School; two book-repair machines at Brookside and Roosevelt at $463.62 each; a sensory table for Brookside at $310.98; $600 to fund Roos Brews, a student-run coffee and snack cart operated by Roosevelt’s RISE classroom; $2,500 for a Roosevelt parent-partnership series of social and emotional learning workshops; $1,500 to revitalize the AMD fitness center (Project Inspire); $2,000 for additional physical-education equipment at AMD; $2,500 for the OHS business club; $1,000 for FIRST Robotics registration; $2,459.94 for the OHS Science Olympiad; and $1,100 for the Hudson River Sloop program at OHS.
“Ossining Matters is our educational foundation,” Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter said when introducing the group. “Their sole purpose and goal is to basically to take a look at our learning opportunities to have grants that support those and that enrich and enhance them.”
Bralio Carrero, a board member who presented part of the list, said the grants cover projects from pre-K through high school. Board President Gina Sartario said the foundation received more than $62,000 in requests this year and that the committee worked to maximize impact and find lower-cost vendors.
District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maria (last name not specified) thanked Ossining Matters and said the awards “are truly transforming the educational experiences of our children” and allow teachers to “turn ideas into action.”
The board and district leaders encouraged the community to view photos and summaries of the funded projects on the foundation’s website and noted the foundation’s 5K run is scheduled for Sept. 6 with early registration opening July 1.
The grants presentation was part of the superintendent’s regular update; no board motion or vote on the awards was recorded during the meeting.
