District leaders certify graduates, honor retiring deputy superintendent at Southside commencement

At Southside High School’s commencement, district and school leaders formally presented the graduating class and certified completion of requirements for the high school diploma.
Mister Matthew Gavin, superintendent of schools for the Rockville Centre Union Free School District, said, “I attest that they have completed the graduation requirements prescribed by the New York State Department of Education and the Rockville Center Board of Education and are therefore eligible to receive their high school diploma.” Shortly afterward, Brett Rosenthal, the high school assistant principal, began the ceremony’s roll call of graduates.
The program also included institutional recognitions. The district presented an honorary Southside High School diploma to Mister John Murphy in his final Southside High graduation before retirement; speakers thanked Murphy for more than 25 years of service in roles that included teacher, IB coordinator, principal and deputy superintendent. Board of Education members in attendance included Kelli Barry, president; Donna Downing, vice president; Janet Gruner, secretary; Tara Hackett and bridal Messier, trustees. Central office staff introduced at the ceremony included Jacqueline Rehak, assistant superintendent for finance and operations; Marie Dalton, assistant superintendent for special education and pupil personnel services; and others listed during the program.
The ceremony was celebratory and ceremonial in nature; no board votes or district policy actions were taken during the program. Organizers said the full ceremony footage and photos will be made available on the district’s YouTube channel and website.
