The Monroe County Board of Commissioners approved a professional services agreement with Mike Bolton for up to $50,000 to test and, as necessary, remediate residential properties where methamphetamine labs were seized by the Indiana State Police.
County health staff told commissioners the service will allow environmental testing of structures to determine whether remediation is required and to carry out remediation activities. Officials said 11 properties are currently on the county’s list for testing under the contract.
Commissioners discussed the public-health importance of the work. Commissioner Madera said without testing and remediation, properties “just sit there” as health hazards and blighted parcels; the only remaining option in many cases is demolition if contamination renders structures uninhabitable. The board moved and seconded the item; a roll call recorded all three commissioners voting yes and the motion passed 3-0.
The agreement was described during the meeting as enabling county staff to begin testing and determine whether remediation is required; the meeting did not include a detailed remediation schedule or an exact per-property cost. County staff offered to present more details on process and scope if commissioners requested further briefings.
The board’s vote authorizes the health department to contract with the named provider for work up to the stated limit.
