Guam Legislature presents certificates to Guam Select U17 teams after Manila tournament

The recognition honored the Guam Select U17 Boys Blue Team, which finished third, and the Guam Select U17 Boys Red Team, which won first place at the International Basketball Tournament hosted by Kirk Long in Manila. "These young men didn't just play, they made the hardwood their runway," Matanani said as she introduced the teams and called players to receive certificates.
The awards were read as certificates from the committee on rules and signed by the speaker of the 30th Guam Legislature and committee officers, according to Matanani. She named players from the Blue Team as Darnell Camacho, Gavin Boyd, Phoenix Borja and Jared Coe; Coe was noted as one of the tournament's all-stars. Matanani named Darwin Sehen, Leland Plinske and Peter Uggen for the Red Team; Uggen was also named an all-star. Coach Desmond Mendel was mentioned as the Blue Team coach but was not present to receive his certificate. Coach Mark Johnson was named for the Red Team and gave brief remarks thanking parents and supporters.
Coach Mark Johnson addressed the group and thanked families for their support. "I really appreciate you parents," he said. "Thank you for trusting us and supporting us in our Guam Select journey. We got a lot more in store, but I really appreciate you guys and the love and support that we've had from the family and the athletes and all the coaches. So thank you. Thank you."
Matanani emphasized local pride in the teams' performances. She noted the teams brought trophies and highlights back to Guam and said the players "repped Guam" and "elevated it." The ceremony was brief and strictly ceremonial; no legislative motions or policy actions related to the awards were discussed or recorded during the remarks.
Certificates were presented to players and coaches with the notation read aloud by Matanani; the certificate reference string as read in the session was "130Two-thirty8." Coach Desmond Mendel was noted as absent and will be handed his certificate at a later time, according to the remarks.
