Council approves Southview Sections 5–6 final plat after members voice drainage concerns from homeowners

Staunton City Council on June 26 approved the final plat for Southview Sections 5 and 6, which adds 36 lots in Section 5 and 30 lots in Section 6, bringing the subdivision’s recorded total to 183 lots to date.

The planning commission recommended approval with those same conditions; staff reported the developer addressed the items required for council action.
Multiple councilors raised concerns about drainage and open-space issues reported by the neighborhood homeowners association in existing sections. Councilor Overholtzer and others said drainage problems persist in open spaces between earlier sections and have affected newer homes built within the past 12–18 months. Councilors emphasized the vote before them pertained to plat conformance, but they asked staff to pursue remedies so that existing and new homeowners do not continue to experience drainage and maintenance issues.
Councilor Woods moved approval; council adopted the plat by roll call with all members voting aye. Staff said it will track infrastructure completion and the developer’s obligations to correct drainage problems under existing development notes and agreements.
