San Marcos Unified board hires assistant principal, extends top administrators' contracts

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — At its June 26 regular meeting, the San Marcos Unified School District Board of Education approved multiple personnel actions, including hiring Jonathan Reyes as assistant principal at Mission Hills High School and one-year extensions to the employment agreements for the superintendent and three assistant/deputy superintendents.
The actions were part of the board’s consent and action agenda for personnel on June 26. Board members voted by roll call, with Member Carlson, Member Herrick, Member Martin, Member Ahmad and Member Meehan voting in favor of each item.
The personnel slate began with a recommendation to hire Jonathan Reyes as assistant principal at Mission Hills High School. "It gives me great pleasure to recommend the employment of Jonathan Reyes in the position of assistant principal at Mission Hills High School," said Joel, a district staff member presenting the item. The presenter described Reyes as a bilingual educator with more than a decade of experience in math, science and coding instruction, including district- and school-wide leadership on standards-aligned and trauma-informed instruction.
The board also approved amendments extending the terms of several existing executive contracts: the superintendent’s amended agreement was extended from its prior expiration of June 30, 2028, to June 30, 2029; the deputy superintendent of educational services' agreement was extended from June 30, 2027, to June 30, 2028; and the assistant superintendents for business services and human resources each received one-year extensions to June 2028. The board noted the contracts and their unchanged terms remain publicly available on the district HR web page.
Each extension was presented as an amendment to the incumbent agreements and approved by a separate motion and roll-call vote. After the votes, several board members offered brief congratulations to the administrators and to Reyes on his hiring.
The motions and roll-call votes were recorded in the meeting minutes; no dissenting votes were recorded and no additional conditions or amendments to the contract terms were announced at the meeting.
Looking ahead, the newly hired assistant principal will assume duties at Mission Hills High School per district onboarding procedures; the extended executive agreements will remain subject to the terms already posted on the district HR page.
