The Yukon Route 66 Main Street program reopened orders for its Yukon Salutes military- and first-responder-honor banners on June 1, with new orders accepted through Aug. 1 and rehang orders processed throughout August.
Program leaders said the effort will display the banners during Veterans Month; the design point reported the program has received "just shy of 20" orders so far and that some community members sponsor banners anonymously.
Vicki Davis, director for Yukon Main Street, told the board the banner program is part of routine seasonal programming tied to the group's design point. "At this point, we are sitting just shy of 20, and, there have been a few that have contacted me. They just have not yet submitted banner orders," Davis said. Davis also noted rehang requests will be taken in August.
Rick Caccini of the Yukon Veterans Museum said his organization continues to promote the banner program and expects to have a mobile museum unit at a city park on July 3 to help raise awareness. "We will continue pushing the banner program for Vicky," Caccini said.
Board members noted the program honors current and former military and first responders with ties to Yukon; organizers said honorees do not have to currently live in Yukon if they have a Yukon connection. The board did not take formal action beyond informational updates.
Organizers asked community members who know potential recipients to reach out; staff also said anonymous sponsorship options exist for recipients who do not want to pay or be publicly identified.
The banner program update concluded the Main Street design point report; staff said additional details will be provided as orders are finalized.
