Reston Association gives Q2 update: pool renovations, Barton Hill tennis near completion, Lake dredging underway

Austin Mayhew, Reston Association’s capital projects manager, briefed the board on second-quarter capital work on June 26, reporting that the 2025 CIP includes 59 approved projects, with 22 scheduled, 15 in progress, and 22 completed or purchased.
Completed work highlighted by staff included Autumnwood Pool plaster renovation (budgeted $250,000 and completed for $232,000), upgrades at Uplands and Lake Newport pools (including new chlorination systems and conversion of one pool from liquid chlorine to a puck system), and the Lake Ann Canal dredging project (about 1,200 cubic yards of spoils removed). Staff said all vehicles and equipment budgeted for 2025 have been purchased.
Barton Hill Tennis renovation is at about 95 percent completion; staff reported installation of a rain garden behind the courts and final contractor punch-list items pending. The Hook Road ball field renovation (phase 1) is selected for construction and awaiting a VDOT construction entrance permit before kickoff in quarter 3.
Lake Thoreau dredging and a proposed observation dock behind Lake Thoreau pool were discussed; staff will hold a community input session on July 9 for the dock design. The Lake Newport Tennis renovation will be broken into three funding years (design/engineering in 2025, construction start in 2026, completion in 2027), and staff described community engagement that identified resurfacing, lighting, and bottle-filling stations as high priorities.
Staff also noted a Lake Ann sidewalk project that preliminary survey work showed to be mostly on non-RA property; RA staff are coordinating with Fairfax County for sidewalks in the area.
