Airport director says staff planned for NBA finals crowding; recognizes student cargo study and interns

The Oklahoma City Airport Trust director told trustees on June 26 that airport staff prepared for potential large crowds if the Oklahoma City Thunder had forced a Game 7 in the NBA finals, and thanked employees and students who helped with planning and research.
The director said staff ‘‘were dealing with that in planning to try to mitigate the impact on the traffic and finding places to put people,’’ and named Scott Keith, Eric Baer, Michelle Folkes and Jim Thrash as among those who worked several days on crowd-management planning. The director said some employees were available overnight to assist with traffic control and that the anticipated surge did not materialize.
The director recognized Jackson Morton, ‘‘one of our interns this semester’’ from the University of Oklahoma, and said another intern from Oklahoma State University will attend the July meeting. He also thanked Austin Sweet and Christopher Sanchez, logistics and transportation majors at the University of Central Oklahoma, and said the students, with support from Dr. Hussain Najimi and Dr. Russ Norasana, produced a study on cargo opportunities at Will Rogers Airport. The director said he will send the students a letter recognizing their work.
On airport traffic the director said, ‘‘We seem to be catching up though, and we're pretty much matching our numbers from last year,’’ referring to passenger volumes after a drop in the first quarter. No passenger counts or dollar figures were provided.
The remarks came during the director’s report portion of the Trust’s regular meeting; no formal board action was recorded on any of the items the director raised.
The Trust moved on to consideration of airport agreements and projects after the director’s report.
