The Northside ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) presented its annual report to the Board on highlights from the 2024–25 year and recommendations for wellness, physical activity and social‑emotional learning.
Report highlights: John Carollo, parent chair of SHAC, told trustees the council has 24 members including district officials, parents, community partners and two students. SHAC met four times and worked via subcommittees on the local wellness policy, physical activity and fitness planning, nutrition and a new focus this year on the impacts of cell‑phone use in classrooms. The council also reviewed new child‑nutrition reporting protocols and supported hands‑only CPR training by the American Heart Association.
Trustee response and volunteers: Trustees thanked SHAC volunteers and staff facilitator Dr. Kimberly Ridgeley. Board members asked staff to provide the board with a list of SHAC members slated to continue and requested the meeting dates and times to include in future recruitment materials. The board also discussed nominations for next year; administrators said a slate of candidates would be presented in August for appointment.
Why it matters: State law requires districts to maintain a SHAC to advise on health and wellness policy. The council’s review of cell‑phone impacts and strengthens in‑district coordination on nutrition reporting, physical activity and social‑emotional learning, issues trustees said are important for student well‑being and learning.
Ending: Trustees praised SHAC’s volunteer service and asked staff to circulate member lists, meeting dates and recruitment information to ensure continuity and parent representation as the board prepares appointments for the coming year.
