City planning staff presented summary findings from two public surveys at the July 26 Planning Commission meeting: 101 responses to a communications-preferences survey and 77 responses to a community "pulse" survey.
Staff summarized the communications survey by saying most respondents "are receiving information from the city via social media, the city newsletter and word-of-mouth" and that respondents preferred "email, Facebook, and the city newsletter," with a request for at least monthly communications. Staff also reported that most respondents preferred text alerts for emergencies and were only mildly confident they could quickly access information in an emergency.
On the "pulse of the community" survey, staff reported respondents generally agreed with the city's vision and mission statements but said downtown is "not flourishing" and listed missing amenities such as more restaurants and a community/recreation center. Respondents also cited concerns about property upkeep and a desire for greater "pride in ownership" and more visible policing, while many respondents remained optimistic about Medical Lake's future.
Staff said a fuller written summary and takeaways will be prepared for publication on the city website and included in the periodic-update outreach materials. No commission action was taken; the surveys will inform the next phase of the comprehensive-plan update and public outreach.
