Court approves replacement cruiser and accepts firearms grant for sheriff's office

Scott County Fiscal Court approved a request from Sheriff Nettles to replace a totaled 2016 Dodge Charger and accepted a recent firearms award at its June 26 meeting.
Sheriff Nettles said the cruiser was totaled after an on-duty crash. He told the court the insurance payout was $10,547 and the Ford Explorer the department wants to buy is priced at $40,247. He said the county would cover the unbudgeted difference; officials estimated the net ask from county funds after insurance would be approximately $38,000 including upfit.
"I'm asking for the court's permission to replace that vehicle," the sheriff said. Court members discussed fleet allocation: the new Explorer would be used as an administrative vehicle, an admin vehicle would be cascaded to patrol, and a replaced patrol vehicle could be reassigned to a school resource officer. The sheriff said patrol vehicles would be prioritized for the highest-mileage assignments.
The court voted by voice to approve the replacement request.
Separately, the sheriff announced receipt of a $13,000-plus award to purchase off-duty firearms replacements and 10 short-barrel rifles (SBRs) for patrol. "That did get awarded. It got awarded. So that'll cover that in in full cost," he said. The court approved acknowledgment of the award by voice vote.
Court members asked the sheriff's office to coordinate funding and fleet planning with the county treasurer and to return with any necessary budget adjustments.
