Council approves Monroe 30 annexation; area designated residential

The Monroe City Council voted 6-0 on June 24 to accept second reading and adopt ordinance 013/2025, annexing the property commonly known as the Monroe 30 annexation area into the city and assigning zoning and comprehensive plan designations.
Anita Marrero, staff member, returned the annexation ordinance to council with no new information since first reading on June 10. Council member Gamble moved to accept second reading and adopt ordinance 013/2025, which annexes the Monroe 30 area, designates the area as R-7 (7 dwelling units per acre) on the city’s zoning map and Residential-1 on the comprehensive plan future land use map, and requires that properties in the annexation area be taxed on the same basis as other city properties; Council member Fisher seconded. The motion passed 6-0.
Council member Walker commented that he preferred the property be developed within Monroe city limits rather than outside the city so that roads, parks and services would benefit the city and to ensure police and other public services respond to properties within city jurisdiction. Staff noted the action adopted supporting findings and set an effective date.
