Commissioners approve $1,000 sponsorship for Manchester Independence Day celebration

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners on June 24 approved a $1,000 sponsorship to help fund the City of Manchester’s Independence Day celebration, scheduled July 3.
Summer Shofey, chair of Manchester’s Downtown Development Authority, told commissioners the city is staging a free, family-oriented event with more than 50 vendors, multiple food trucks and volunteer-run games; she said the cost of the event is about $22,000 and the city had raised roughly $4,000 in donations to date.
A commissioner moved that the county be a platinum-level sponsor with a $1,000 contribution; the motion passed on a voice vote. Commissioners discussed prior county contributions to fireworks and the goal of minimizing taxpayer dollars through private sponsorship. The city representative said vendors and volunteers would provide game activities and that fireworks would be set to music.
The sponsorship will be processed by county staff as a one-time contribution to support the event.
