Board schedules July 22 public hearing on permanent closure of Meadow Boone Road

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners on June 24 set a public hearing for July 22 to consider permanently closing Meadow Boone Road after staff found no record of a prior, formal closure hearing.
Public works staff said the road has been gated and has not been maintained past the gate for years. Landowner Scott Bowden requested the county either accept restoration of the road to county standards at his expense and then assume maintenance, or hold a public hearing to consider permanent closure. Staff reported that records do not show any formal closure after earlier discussions and that a gate placed on the road effectively stopped county maintenance beyond it.
Staff told the board that if the county were to accept a restoration-and-acceptance proposal, public works director Brian Griffin would inspect the road to ensure it met county standards. Alternatively, the board may hold the hearing to consider permanent abandonment under the statutory standard that a road "ceases to be used for a public purpose" and serves no substantial public benefit. The board moved and seconded a motion to advertise and hold a public hearing on whether Meadow Boone Road should be permanently closed on July 22, 2025; the motion passed.
No decision was taken on closure at the June 24 meeting; the July 22 public hearing will provide the formal record for further action.
