Trustee Roberto Ocampo described a June 18 press conference organized by Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo and said local officials, union leaders and education administrators stressed the need to protect immigrant families. He suggested the board consider passing a resolution supporting immigrant parents and students and posting constitutional “know your rights” materials on the district website.
Deputy Superintendent Monica Ansell and district staff described actions already under way. Ansell reported the district’s social workers, community school coordinators, counselors and legal training partners have provided “know your rights” presentations and created safety plans for families. She said the district distributed red cards and ran a presentation at Barton earlier in the year, and that staff can compile a timeline of what has been done and what will follow.
Board members asked for a formal presentation so the full board can see current supports and avoid duplicating community offers. The board did not take formal action on a resolution during the meeting; trustees instead directed staff to prepare materials and consider workshops and website resources for immigrant families.
