Board certifies updated district population; community education funding to be affected

The South Washington County Schools Board of Education adopted a resolution June 26 to recertify the district population for the 2025–26 fiscal year, a step the administration said will affect community education funding calculations.
Jake Winchell, director of community education, explained that Minnesota statutes require a district population to be certified by the Department of Education from the most recent federal census or, in non-census years, by a state demographer estimate. Winchell said the district may pass a resolution by June 30 submitting the updated population as determined by the state demographer.
Winchell told the board that the state demographer estimated the district population rose from 113,887 in 2022 to 118,152 in 2024 and that the population increase will affect the community education program revenue calculation because the funding formula uses district population. "According to the estimates of the state demographer, the district population increased from 113,887 in 2022 to 118,152 in 2024," Winchell said.
The board moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by roll-call vote; each voting member recorded a "yes." The certification will be submitted to the state demographer and used in community education funding calculations for 2025–26.
