South Washington County Schools board approves five district policy updates

The South Washington County Schools Board of Education approved five district policies at its June 26 meeting, the board chair confirmed.
Superintendent Julie Nielsen presented the policies for final approval and said the package included Policy 611 (homeschooling), Policy 612.1 (Title I parental involvement policies), Policy 615 (testing accommodations, modifications and exemptions for students with Individualized Education Programs and students on Section 504 plans), Policy 620 (credit for learning, updated to reflect a recent statutory change) and Policy 624 (online learning options). "This evening I am asking for approval of those 5 policies," Nielsen said.
The board voted on the consent motion to adopt the policies as a group; Sharon Van Leer moved the motion and Simi Patnaik seconded. After a voice vote the chair announced the motion passed.
Board members did not request separate discussion of any of the five policies during the meeting, and Nielsen said there were no proposed changes to several of the policies before the board. The superintendent noted an update to names and programs in the testing-accommodations policy and said Policy 620 reflects a change in statute the district has discussed previously.
The action completes the board's routine policy review for the items presented; the district did not identify additional changes that required returning an item to the board for individual consideration. The policies take effect under the board's usual policy-adoption procedures.
