The Board approved a grant contract between the State of Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance and the City of Ripley to participate in a law enforcement hiring and training program that funds hiring and retention bonuses.
City staff explained the grant provides bonus funding to employers for officers hired after May 2023 and through 2026. The program sets staged retention payments: an entry bonus schedule described by staff cited amounts in the range of $3,000 up to $8,000 over a 36‑month timeframe for some hires, and larger certified‑officer payments that begin after six months and can total up to $10,000. Staff said the grant funds are awarded to the employer to distribute to qualifying employees under the program rules.
Council made a motion to accept the contract and approved it by roll call. Staff indicated the grant total for the city is on the order of tens of thousands of dollars and that program eligibility is limited to hires within the specified start date window in the contract.
