Westbury announces K–8 summer programs, schedules and services
Summary
The district outlined multiple K–8 summer offerings including STEAM, Active Zone intramurals, fine and performing arts, multilingual learner programming and extended school year special education services; breakfast, lunch and transportation will be provided.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Robin Barnett and staff told the board on June 10 that Westbury’s K–8 summer programming will offer a menu of signature options, with different start dates and lengths designed to let families combine offerings.
Barnett said a two-week STEAM program called Westbury Futuremakers will run July 7–17, Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. for entering grades 1–8. A four-week Westbury Summer Academy for Multilingual Learners will run July 7–Aug. 1, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. The Westbury Active Zone intramurals and athletics program will run July 21–Aug. 7, Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., while the summer fine and performing arts program will run July 21–Aug. 14, Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. An invite-only extended school year program for students with disabilities (Westbury Future Makers Summer Academy for Students with Disabilities) will run July 1–Aug. 15, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m., Barnett said.
Barnett said breakfast and lunch will be provided and transportation will be available for all programs; registration was announced as “live now.” The district said families can mix and match programs to create two- to six-week summer schedules.
Board members asked clarifying questions about daily schedules and meal provision; Barnett and Superintendent Dr. Chase answered the schedule questions and confirmed meals and transportation. The board did not take a formal vote at the June 10 meeting on these program elements; the presentation was given as a report to the board.
Barnett urged families to contact the summer program coordinator, Miss Massillon, for program-specific registration and lead-teacher assignments.
