The Planning Commission reviewed and adopted the compensation changes included in Metro Council’s recent budget action, which will take effect July 1, 2025.
Chair and staff summarized that the new pay structure increases pay ranges for every classification in Metro’s pay plan, with an average increase of about 8% systemwide and an average increase for Planning Department positions of about 9%. The director’s proposed increase was discussed in the context of aligning the office’s compensation with peer cities for comparable director roles and recognizing expanded responsibilities, including integration of historic preservation functions and implementation support for transportation initiatives.
Commissioners and Council Member Campbell spoke in support; Commissioner Hanley and others emphasized the importance of competitive pay to retain staff. The commission voted to adopt the pay plan changes and to move forward with the director compensation as reflected in the council’s pay plan.
Why it matters: The pay plan is intended to improve the department’s market competitiveness and reduce turnover; staff said stronger compensation will help the department recruit and retain employees needed to manage the city’s growth and implementation work.
