Council refers and tables permits, withdraws event request and recommends internment resolution to full council

The Lawrence City Council committee took several procedural actions on permits, a special event and a ceremonial resolution. The committee withdrew a special-event request for "Play Date with Little Sprouts" at O'Connell Park and recommended a resolution honoring Lawrence service members interred in North Africa be forwarded to the full council.

Specifically, the committee approved a motion to withdraw document 27625 (Play Date with Little Sprouts and Station 8 at O'Connell Park, South Common) after noting the requested date was June 28 and that the committee would not meet on that date. Councilor Del Rosario moved the withdrawal; Councilor Santiago seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote.

On permit matters, the committee tabled document 27725, a junk dealer permit application, requesting the applicant attend the committee at a later date for discussion. Councilor Santiago moved to table the item; Councilor Del Rosario seconded and the motion passed.

The committee also received a request for enforcement at 341 South Bridal (document 2 79 25). The petitioner, Mr. Petrillo, asked the committee to table the enforcement matter; the committee approved the motion to table and will await the petitioner’s rescheduled appearance.

On a separate ceremonial item, the committee recommended document 2 78 25, a resolution honoring the internment of Lawrence World War II service members at the North Africa Cemetery, be sent to the full council with a favorable recommendation. Councilor Del Rosario, the item’s sponsor, named five individuals in the resolution: Lear Ljandra; Kenneth Keough; John Gibbo; Stanley Barucchi; and George Nice. Del Rosario said he plans to attend a trip to Tunisia later this year with family and place a city flag on the graves as a small ceremony. The motion to forward the resolution was made by Councilor Del Rosario and seconded by Vice Chair Reyes; it passed by voice vote.

Why it matters: the junk dealer permit and enforcement request were tabled for in-person discussion with applicants or petitioners; the resolution will proceed to the full council for final action and ceremonial recognition.

Next steps: the applicant for the junk dealer permit and Mr. Petrillo (341 South Bridal enforcement request) will be asked to appear before the committee at a future meeting; the resolution will be considered by the full council.
