Several residents used the Lawrence City Council public comment period to praise city employees and unions and to press the council to hire additional inspectors and veterans department staff.
H Mali, a resident of 53 Chester Street, told councilors the city’s police and public works departments were “doing such an excellent job” and said the Lawrence Police Department’s leadership under “Chief Morris Adler” has been “impeccable.” H Mali said, “We support Lawrence Police Officers Union,” praised the Department of Public Works and the inspection department and urged the council to “hire more inspector[s].”
H Mali also voiced support for Lawrence Public Schools and the teachers union, named Superintendent Ralph Bereroff and called for better compensation for cafeteria workers. On veteran services, H Mali said the city “must hire 2 vacant position[s] in our veteran department” and asked the council to “create the best elder communication for our city.”
Comments were made during the meeting’s public participation portion; no council motion or vote appears in the transcript responding to these requests. The speakers offered endorsements of unions and city staff performance and made staffing and compensation requests for council consideration.
Because the transcript records these items only as public comments, any staffing or compensation changes would require formal proposals and votes in future council business.
