La Vergne — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved agreements on June 26 with Burris Thomas Thompson & Associates to perform a compensation study and a secondary study to examine pay stipends and compression issues.
City staff described the main study as a market compensation review covering approximately 125 job classifications and about 301 full‑time and regular part‑time employees. Staff said the consultant previously conducted a city compensation study about two years ago and that rapid market movement has prompted a follow-up to ensure La Vergne remains competitive in the regional labor market.
Officials said the study is scheduled to start in September and staff anticipates wrapping it up around Thanksgiving so findings can inform the fiscal-year 2026‑27 budget. The secondary study will assess stipends, identify compression (where longer‑tenured employees’ pay approaches or exceeds newer hires), and recommend adjustments to mitigate pay compression.
Board members asked whether the city had internal candidates for a forthcoming City Recorder position and discussed budget impacts; staff told the board that funding for recurring positions would likely come from fund balance in the first year if adopted, and that the compensation study is intended to inform salary-setting for the next budget cycle.
What happens next: the studies will proceed per the consultant contract; staff will return with results and any budget requests tied to the findings.
