City awards CDBG funds to homeless services, affordable-rental acquisition and playgrounds

City staff reported that the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocation increased by about $60,000 from expectations and summarized the city’s awards for the coming program year.
Christine Pavlik, community development staff, said the city was allocated approximately $60,000 more than anticipated and identified awardees: $19,000 to Community Assistance Teams of Flagstaff for a mobile shower and outreach program; $45,000 to Homeless Youth Connection for youth coaches helping students finish high school; $55,000 to Northland Family Help Center for a case manager for its youth shelter; and $280,000 to Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona to acquire two additional units for permanent affordable rentals.
Pavlik said the remaining approximately $200,000 will be used for playground updates in target neighborhoods — specifically Brandon Homes in the Pine Knoll neighborhood and benefits to the Southside neighborhoods. She said the city will work on the consolidated plan (the five-year strategic plan for CDBG funds) this fall and that projects are expected to come to fruition this fall.
