The Village of Waukesha village board unanimously approved a budget amendment June 6 to spend Act 102 funds on medical and communications equipment for the fire department.
Fire Department leadership told the board the amendment would pay for two upgraded video laryngoscopes — one allocated to each ambulance — and 14 lapel microphones to improve radio communications. The chief said the video devices raise first-attempt intubation success “very high in the 90 percent” and allow recording for training and quality review.
The board discussed costs and quotes. Staff said quoted prices were slightly higher than the line items in the packet; the department had obtained multiple quotes (including a Baycom quote and a secondary quote from 2wayradios.com). Trustees accepted the department’s plan to use roughly $8,000 of Act 102 funds for the radio equipment and to find a workaround if quotes exceeded the current line item. The chief explained the village typically budgets Act 102 receipts the following year, but the board agreed to spend a portion of the incoming funds now so crews could receive equipment earlier.
A motion to approve the amendment passed with all trustees voting in favor; meeting minutes were to reflect a 5-0 vote. The packet summarized Act 102 revenue at about $37,000 for this cycle; approving the purchases will reduce the amount available for next year’s budget by the amount spent in advance.
The board directed department staff to finalize vendor selection consistent with the approved appropriation and report back if additional funding is required.
