Platte County approves $1.58 million in parks and stormwater capital spending, voters’ sales tax funds projects

Erickson said the centers’ original flatwork had deteriorated, particularly after the last winter, and recommended awarding the project to Advanced Asphalt Paving and Concrete LLC as the low bidder. The total cost for the community center repairs was presented as $467,000, funded from reserve accounts accumulated from community‑center membership revenues; the county auditor certified funds were available.
Erickson also presented a cooperative purchase agreement for playground equipment at Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows. The project, described as phase 2 of park activation, includes a destination, wood‑based playground plus site work (parking, shelter house, restroom). Erickson said the county used a cooperative purchasing contract and received multiple proposals; the chosen design is wood‑based to match the park’s nature theme. The total cost presented for the playground plus site work was $1,114,000. Staff said the funds come from the parks and stormwater retail sales tax and that the site work portion is out to bid.
On stormwater grants, Planning and Zoning Director Daniel Erickson told the commission the county received 11 applications totaling $574,000 and the stormwater committee recommended funding eight projects, including work in Walnut Creek South Association, Lake Waucoma, Hawkesbury Home Association, Parkville (two projects), Platte Woods, and Riverside. Erickson said projects that were not recommended included a bridge project at Houston Lake (not a stormwater issue) and two Northmoor requests that were judged premature relative to adjacent MoDOT work; staff recommended those applicants reapply when projects are ready.
All items carried on recorded votes with roll calls that resulted in 3‑0 outcomes. Where noted, staff said warranty information and site visit references supported the playground selection and that playground equipment generally has a life expectancy of about 20–30 years.
Next steps include executing the community center construction contract and cooperative purchase agreement, continuing the site‑work bidding for Michael Gunn Park, and issuing grant contracts to the stormwater grant recipients recommended by the committee.
