Board approves RFP for school meal service as Revolution Foods contract expires

The Palmdale Aerospace Academy District board approved a request to issue a request for proposals for the district’s meal service vendor after the current contract with Revolution Foods expired June 30.
Staff told the board that because the district has used its allowable contract extensions, issuing a formal RFP is necessary to remain eligible for federal and state school meal funding. The board approved the motion to release the RFP by voice vote.
District staff said they will bring a fuller presentation to the next board meeting on July 22 with details on current per-meal costs, participation rates and options for different service models. Staff is studying whether to continue with a vendor that precooks and delivers meals or to move toward more on-site food prep that could produce fresher meals but would require additional equipment — including a walk-in refrigerator — and potentially changes to staffing and storage capacity.
Staff said student feedback is already collected via an active QR survey on meals and that the district adjusts menus monthly based on student responses; staff noted parent feedback has been less robust and said the RFP process may include taste-testing sessions that involve parents. The district also said it is working with an experienced consultant to model options and will visit potential vendor facilities as part of the RFP evaluation.
The board approved the motion to release the RFP; the motion and second were recorded during the meeting and the resulting vote was read as unanimous 'aye' by voice vote with no roll-call tallies read into the public record.
