Orange City is offering free self-serve sandbags at Wagon Trail Dog Park, 1201 South Bovitt Avenue, while a hurricane or other storm approaches, Maddie McAllister said.
The station is intended to help residents protect homes from localized flooding. "Sandbags are free with a limit of 10 per household. Be sure to bring your own shovel, we've got a few on-site but they do go fast," McAllister said. She said sandbags are available from the Wagon Trail Dog Park entrance points on East Ohio and Rhode Island avenues, with an exit on the Thorpe dirt road.
City officials advised residents how to fill and place sandbags to form an effective barrier. "Fill each bag halfway to 2 thirds full. Overfilling makes them hard to stack. Leave the top untied and folded under when you place it. This helps the bag mold together and form a stronger barrier," McAllister said. The announcement described the site as self-serve but said public works staff will be on-site and able to help if needed.
Distribution times and any updates will be posted on orangecityfl.gov and the city's official social media channels, McAllister said. She added that operations "may be extended based on demand and weather conditions." The city did not specify exact hours of operation; residents should check the website or social media for current schedules.
