Belton police finish jail remodel; staff say booking capacity restored

Belton Police Department staff briefed the City Council on a completed renovation of the municipal jail, which department presenters said is original to the police building and had not been fully updated since construction in 1988.
Lieutenant Mary Brueggi, who introduced the presentation, described multiple surprises discovered during work and credited Sergeant John Keck and other staff for performing repairs and site work. Brueggi said the council had previously approved roughly $112,000 for the remodel and the contractor Wilson Group was selected from three bids; an additional $30,000 option had been offered by the contractor to do ceiling and corridor painting that had been cut from the original scope.
Brueggi described floor coatings that had been peeling and a defective drain grate which posed a safety hazard. She said crews ground the floors to bare concrete, sealed them, installed shower boxes with timed shutoffs, repaired drains and refurbished cells in male and female pods. Brueggi said the jail project was finished May 30: “It was finished, May 30, and we've been doing great ever since.”
Staff said the renovation restored secure holding and booking capacity that had been limited while temporary booking arrangements were used. The presentation included before‑and‑after photos and staff thanked the council for approving funds; no additional appropriation was requested at the meeting.
