The Laredo Suicide Prevention Committee announced a "You're Not Alone" rally scheduled for Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and encouraged organizations and individuals who cannot attend to select their own location and participate by standing outside facilities with signs or shirts.
"If you cannot come to that location, you can select your own location," Dr. Jimmy Bassan, committee chair, said, encouraging broad participation. He credited combined outreach efforts with reductions in some recent monthly numbers and urged continued community involvement.
Committee members discussed plans for September suicide-awareness activities, including coordinating school participation during pep rallies, a proclamation, and a 5K walk/run and mental-health wellness fair at North Central Park. Laura Cortez said Border Region will host a walk at the local mental-health authority center on Sept. 13.
To support committee work, members discussed a popcorn-sale fundraiser led by Maria. The group agreed to sell $10 bags of popcorn for a two-week period; Maria said the seller and committee would keep $4 per bag to support committee activities. The committee set a collection/check-in date and asked members to report sales: "We'll send out a note. I can prepare something for that image. And we'll invite everybody to come and brag about how many of you have sold and turned in your money," a committee member said.
Several partner organizations announced related events: WestCare and partners plan a back-to-school event at Step Academy in August (9 a.m.–12 p.m.), and other agencies outlined overdose-awareness events in August. Committee leaders asked members to share event dates and volunteer opportunities via committee staff so they can be promoted across member organizations. No formal appropriation of funds or budget change was made; the fundraiser and events were scheduled as committee activities.
