A well driller with decades of experience briefed the commissioners court about the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer and told the court that proposed high-capacity wells in neighboring counties are unlikely to cause immediate, direct depletion of shallow Wilcox water supplies in Van Zandt County, though he cautioned that poorly managed pumping can damage local well productivity.

The driller's explanation clarified the geological differences across the region, arguing that recharge rates and geologic layering make wholesale, near-term impacts to Van Zandt County unlikely but that long-term or heavy pumping in certain formations can cause local drawdown and well-performance issues.
Danny Ayers, a well driller who said he has worked in wells for about 41 years, walked the court through the local stratigraphy, describing the Wilcox formation in Van Zandt County as mixed sand, clay and limestone with relatively low porosity compared with coarser sand units farther southeast. He said water in the Wilcox moves slowly ' a few feet per year ' and that deeper, coarser sands farther southeast can yield higher-capacity wells where the geology is different. Ayers warned that aggressive, uncoordinated pumping could locally collapse sand around wells or cause production decline if engineers and operators do not manage withdrawals and recharge.
Commissioners asked whether the county should adopt a formal policy opposing commercial pumping in neighboring counties; Ayers cautioned that some proposals aim at commercial extraction and that counties should assess both the scientific evidence and whether political coordination or district formation could shift costs to residents. He advised that the best local protections are careful permitting practices, local monitoring and requiring pumpers to demonstrate sustainable production rates rather than sudden high-rate extraction.
The court did not adopt any resolution at the workshop; members thanked Ayers for the technical background and directed staff to assemble the academic and state agency reports (including Texas Water Development Board materials and earlier hydrology reports) Ayers cited for subsequent review.
