The South Colonie Central School District Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday authorizing the district to participate in a regional vendor‑risk operations arrangement intended to streamline compliance with New York's Education Law 2‑d student‑privacy requirements.
Superintendent Christopher Perry told the board that the district's regional cooperative — identified at the meeting as the Northeast Regional Information Center (NERIC) working with other BOCES/RICs — will negotiate standard agreements with vendors such as Aspen and LinkedIn on behalf of cooperating districts. Those agreements are meant to ensure vendors protect personally identifiable student information and comply with Ed. Law 2‑d restrictions on data sale or inappropriate sharing.
Perry said the regional approach allows South Colonie to “piggyback” on the negotiated terms rather than individually contracting with every vendor for the same protections. The board approved the resolution by voice vote, 9–0.
The arrangement, as described at the meeting, transfers some administrative burden for vendor‑risk review to the regional center while keeping final district oversight. No individual vendor contract was approved at the meeting; the resolution authorizes participation in the regional arrangement and acceptance of regionally negotiated safeguards.
Board members asked no substantive questions during the vote and the resolution will allow the district to rely on the regional reviews to help meet statutory student‑data privacy obligations under Ed. Law 2‑d.
