District to move spring staff engagement survey to April after spring decline in engagement

District leaders reported a decline in staff engagement during the spring survey and said they will change the survey calendar to allow district and building leaders to act on results within the same school year.
Sabrina Johnson, district staff overseeing staff engagement, told the board the spring survey had 1,140 participants and that 48% reported being engaged, down from 54% in the fall. "We have decided that we are going to shift our spring survey from May to April," Johnson said, noting that the earlier timing will let administrators analyze results and begin interventions before the school year ends.
Why it matters: staff engagement is a district key performance indicator used to guide retention and support efforts; Johnson said the district’s long-term goal is 60% engaged and fewer than 3% actively disengaged. She also reported retention rates are improving this year, with resignations at about 9.8% (August–July window) compared with 12.4–13.1% in prior years.
Board members supported the timing change, saying an April survey gives administrators time to act before summer. Staff described other steps already in place: building-level action plans based on fall data, principal-level reviews of survey question trends, and cross-district groups to develop recognition and incentive strategies for retention.
Next steps: staff will administer the spring 2026 survey in April 2026, provide building-level reports for planning and track retention and engagement metrics in upcoming board workshops.
