Woodside staff seek short extension as sheriff's contract talks stall

Town Manager Jason Ledbetter told the Woodside Town Council on June 24 that the town has not finalized its policing contract with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and that the sheriff's administration has not yet scheduled a meeting to complete negotiations.
Ledbetter said the council's budget as presented contains contingencies for anticipated cost escalation, but that the town remains in active but incomplete negotiations. Council members suggested a low-effort, short-term solution: send a letter asking the sheriff's office to extend existing contract terms for six months to a year to prevent a gap or a price increase while negotiations continue.
Staff said the town attorney confirmed such an extension letter is permissible. Ledbetter said he will follow up with administrative staff in the sheriff's office and with the county supervisor's office for assistance getting attention from the sheriff's finance or administrative contacts. Council members said a six-month extension at current rates would be their preference.
No formal contract action was taken at the meeting; council directed staff to pursue an administrative extension and to return with further updates.
