Cyclist group flags confusing signage, road conditions after Germantown Cumberland River Greenway closure

Kerry Rogers, a member of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, told the Greenways & Open Spaces Commission that poor detour signage and rough street conditions are discouraging greenway users where the Cumberland River Greenway is closed for construction in Germantown.
"The signage is somewhat lacking," Rogers said, adding that some signs were obscured by vegetation and that riders were forced onto Second Avenue, which he described as "in terrible condition" for bicyclists. Rogers said he and Commissioner Joe Lee had inspected the site and that TDOT had placed some detour signs but that their placement and visibility needed improvement.
Cindy Harrison, manager of the Greenways and Open Space Division, acknowledged receipt of Rogers' letter and said staff had received a response from TDOT and would follow up as appropriate. Harrison asked commissioners to note that greenway users are "customers" whose safety and experience the department considers when coordinating with state transportation officials.
Rogers urged that the department coordinate with TDOT and adjust detour signage to reduce unsafe riding on adjacent streets while construction continues. The commission took the comments under advisement; no formal action was taken during the public-comment period.
