Residents attending Tuesday’s council meeting asked the city to change time restrictions on public parking in the Clinton Avenue area to address evening congestion that they say forces some neighbors to park far from their homes.
Selena Pettiford, a Clinton Avenue resident, described the longstanding morning restriction of 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and requested the city consider modifying the time window to address evening demand. "We're simply requesting these time restrictions be modified to reflect the current needs of the community seeking relief from evening hour parking congestion," Pettiford told the council.
Pettiford gave a personal example of the consequences of limited nearby parking more than a decade ago, describing a neighbor with health issues who once had to park several blocks away and collapsed on his walk home; she said the incident shaped her view on the stakes of the issue. Alderman Leija later told the council he has been researching the problem, has spoken with the church and neighbors, and is in conversation with the city’s traffic engineer.
What the council did: No ordinance or traffic order was adopted at the meeting. Aldermen said staff and the ward representative will continue working with residents and the traffic engineer and will return with options.
Why it matters: Evening parking congestion affects walkability and the ability of residents—particularly those with mobility limits—to park close to home. Changes to posted restrictions require traffic analysis and, if adopted, would be enforced by city parking controls.
