El Segundo Unified picks K–2 reading screen to comply with new state requirement

Executive Director Jack Plotkin said the screening selection followed an extensive process by a district committee. The district will screen all kindergarten through grade‑2 students during the regular school day, staff said.
The motion to approve the screening tool passed unanimously, 5–0. Board members asked clarifying questions about scope and timing during the school day and staff confirmed the screenings will occur during school time for all K–2 students.
Discussion vs. decision: this was a formal approval to adopt the screening instrument and begin implementation per the new statutory requirement; staff will proceed with districtwide screening as described.
