The Fond du Lac City Council on June 25 approved a resolution appointing Troy Damstig as a temporary municipal judge for the Lakeside Municipal Court and separately ordered a special election to fill the municipal judge seat on Nov. 4, 2025.
City Attorney Jennifer Hoffman explained that the sitting Lakeside Municipal Court judge is retiring and that the municipal court's executive committee solicited a temporary replacement for the multi-municipality court. Hoffman said the temporary appointee may choose to run in the November election but is not required to do so; the special election will be open to any eligible candidate who files.
Alderperson Heisler asked for the name of the appointee; Hoffman identified Troy Damstig, a recently retired captain from the Ripon Police Department. The council approved the temporary appointment on a motion by Mr. Godfrey, seconded by Mr. Heisler, and later approved the resolution calling the special election on a motion by Mr. Schisler, seconded by Mr. Godfrey. Both votes were unanimous.
The temporary appointment fills the vacancy until the election; Hoffman said the special election date could not be postponed to spring because the district head judge declined additional extensions.
