Centre County commissioners on Tuesday approved a letter of support for Worth Township’s application to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) multimodal program to rehabilitate about two miles of East Mountain Road.
"This project is nearly cost prohibitive for them," Liz, county staff, told the board, saying the PennDOT cost estimate for the project is $861,840 and that the project would include replacement of about 200 feet of drainage pipe, full installation, roadway widening, shoulder restoration and a quarter‑mile area requiring new subbase.
Liz said DCED has previously waived the local match for the township on a multi‑year basis and that Worth Township lacks the fiscal capacity to fund the project without assistance. "The grant total from PennDOT is $861,840," she said. "Worth Township has indicated that they do not have the match, and we'll be asking for the full amount."
Commissioners voiced support and asked staff to encourage state representatives to back the application; one commissioner said the road is an "important little artery" for the area. The board voted to approve the letter of support and asked county staff to monitor guidance from the state broadband authority on unrelated broadband funding developments.
The county’s letter of support will be submitted with Worth Township’s application, due July 31. County staff noted the township applied in 2024 and did not receive an award and is seeking full funding because required improvements would otherwise be unaffordable for the municipality.
