Sheriff and fire authority brief council on July 4 public‑safety plans; e‑bike enforcement and fireworks cited

Police and fire officials told the Villa Park City Council they are preparing increased staffing and public‑education efforts for the July 4 holiday and that enforcement of a recently adopted e‑bike ordinance and illegal fireworks remains a focus.
Ernie Regadio, administrative sergeant for Villa Park North Operations and Special Events, said the department is in early planning with school resource officer Sean McDermott on an e‑bike safety campaign for the summer tied to the new e‑bike ordinance. Regadio said the department plans outreach to students and increased social media education and will increase enforcement “if need be.”
On fireworks, Regadio said the department intends to use the traditional dispatch model — calls routed through the normal dispatch center at (714) 647‑7000 — to better track calls and resources. He said deputies will supplement dispatch by keeping eyes and ears open in the field; for Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the holiday period the plan is to have two deputies in two separate vehicles patrolling the city during nighttime hours.
Regadio said the department will “try to issue citations” for fireworks violations when enforcement is feasible; he noted that many fireworks offenses are misdemeanors under the Health and Safety Code and that public assistance (reports) is often necessary when violations are not committed in an officer’s presence.
Orange County Fire Authority staff told the council the agency will be fully staffed for the holiday and that fire crews have been active in recent community engagement. An OCFA representative recounted a June 17 structure fire on Providence Drive where crews extinguished a living‑room fire and rescued two cats; the representative said the swift response prevented spread and limited damage. OCFA also reminded residents that only state‑approved “safe and sane” fireworks are legal on July 4 and that those are allowed only between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. in Villa Park. The authority provided a hotline for anonymous reporting of dangerous fireworks at (714) 538‑3501.
Both agencies urged residents to report illegal or dangerous fireworks and to follow posted safety guidance. The council discussed the dispatch hotline used in previous years and staff indicated they would publicize the dispatch number and related safety messages.
