The San Marcos City Council at its June 24 meeting appointed five young residents to the Youth Commission and filled several vacancies on city advisory bodies.
Council appointed Harshini Subramanian (term through 2026), Ava Skolik (2028), Makayla Wood (2028), Nethra Gopalakrishnan (2028) and Prisha Blaney (2028) to the Youth Commission after each candidate spoke about their community service and goals. The mayor noted one of the six seats is an alternate and encouraged newly appointed commissioners to recruit peers to serve as alternates.
The council also appointed Stephanie Bussin to the Community Foundation board; Phai (Fee) Nguyen and Stephanie Vossen were considered for the Climate Action Plan Working Group and the council nominated Phai Nguyen; Mary Kazungu was appointed to Parks & Recreation. For the Budget Review Committee the council reappointed Chris Freeman, Jim Garcia and Salvador Roman as regular members, added Stephanie Bussin as a regular member, and named Edward Badal as an alternate.
Applicants introduced their backgrounds in public service, nonprofit and private‑sector roles and discussed volunteer and community work. Several councilmembers commended the youth commission candidates for events they organized, including a diversity town hall and library collaboration. The appointments were made by voice vote or unanimous consent as noted in the meeting record.
