Pecos council adopts ordinance banning engine brakes on city routes

Pecos City Council on Jan. 24 approved the second reading of an ordinance that prohibits the use of engine brakes within city limits.
Councilmember Hector Proscopy introduced the item, citing complaints from residents and business owners about loud Jake‑brake noise along U.S. Highway 285 and near new development. He told the council the ordinance is intended to reduce noise nuisance for hotels, restaurants and residents along the corridor.
Council discussion noted the high volume of trucks on the highway and the benefit to businesses that plan outdoor dining or other noise‑sensitive operations. Several council members said they expect an initial public‑education period and signage before enforcement intensifies.
The council voted to adopt the ordinance on second reading; the minutes record the motion carried. Staff said they would publish information on the change so truck drivers and carriers can be informed before citations, if any, are issued.
