Summary
The Pecos City Council approved a $1,987,663.50 contract with Deerwood Construction Inc. for water pressure improvements serving Area 1 (near the high school and hospital) and Area 6; staff said the work is budgeted and tied to improving hydrant flow and abandoning an old line under the highway.
Pecos City Council on Jan. 24 approved a resolution awarding the water pressure improvements contract for Areas 1 and 6 to Deerwood Construction Inc. for $1,987,663.50.
Calvin Ridley, director of public works, told the council the project is budgeted and intended to improve pressure and reliability in critical corridors. “Area 1 is near the high school and the hospital,” Ridley said, describing the priority for the first phase.
Ridley said Area 6 work includes abandoning an old line under U.S. Highway 285 — a pipeline the city has had recurring leaks on — and connecting new alignments to improve system redundancy and fire‑hydrant gallons‑per‑minute performance. The bid was the lowest of three received, and staff noted the city’s earlier engineer estimate was higher than the winning bid.
Council members moved and voted to approve the resolution; the minutes record the motion carried. Public works staff said the project ties to broader hydration and fire‑safety goals and to previously discussed fire hydrant upgrades.
Work is expected to follow contract scheduling and will be coordinated with other infrastructure projects to limit disruptions. City staff did not provide final start or completion dates during the meeting.
