St. Mary's County commissioners present proclamation for Northern Senior Activity Center's 20th anniversary

The document also lists amenities including a full-service pottery studio, a fleet of bicycles for use on the nearby Three Notch Trail, a raised stage for performances and a nature trail. The proclamation was signed by the commissioners and dated 06/10/2025.
"I'm Marina Welder Terry, and as the operations manager, I'm very excited to kick off this event and see what a great turnout we have for this milestone," said Marina Welder Terry, operations manager for the Northern Senior Activity Center. Lori Jennings Harris, director of the St. Mary's County Department of Aging and Human Services, welcomed attendees and asked anyone present when the building opened to raise their hands, noting that many attendees have participated since the center opened two decades ago.
Commissioner President Randy Guy, speaking at the event, said he has used senior-center programs himself and thanked staff and volunteers. Guy cited census figures while addressing longer lifespans among residents: "On the 2010 census, I was actually one of the people they called numerator...the senior population of St. Mary's County was growing by 240%. The 2020 census verified that again over 200%." He did not provide copies of those census calculations at the event.
Speakers emphasized the role of staff and volunteers in daily operations. Lori Jennings Harris said the county commissioners "have been very supportive of all the things that we do in our department," and Marina Welder Terry thanked staff and volunteers for making the center a community resource.
The public portion of the program concluded with remarks and a brief celebration; event organizers then continued with an open house. No formal board vote or legislative action was recorded at the event.
