Superintendent Billy said he has tasked staff with forming a work group to implement the requirements of Senate Bill 181, a state measure the district expects will require traceable communication between staff and students.
‘‘I charged Maria Bennett with the task of leading a staff work group around Senate Bill 181,’’ the superintendent said. He described a range of what-if scenarios being discussed by staff and vendors, including whether the district should use a single platform for coaches and teachers or two separate platforms. ‘‘Too early to give you too much information about it at this point, but it is one we’ve gotta have an answer on pretty quick,’’ he said, and noted a June 27 statutory date and that coaches typically start with kids on July 10.
The superintendent said the district has been meeting with vendors and will discuss options with state legislators; he planned to meet with Senator Matt Nunn to raise implementation issues. He described the bill as ‘‘well intentioned’’ but said staff have identified practical concerns that need resolution.
The district’s work group will evaluate vendor platforms, implementation timing and associated costs. The superintendent warned that purchase or subscription costs (he mentioned ParentSquare as a vendor used elsewhere) will likely be significant and could represent an unfunded mandate if the state does not provide funding.
Board members and staff will continue to refine implementation options and return to the board with recommendations once vendors and technical requirements are clearer.
