Town officials said the sign is 84 inches wide by 48 inches high and will be mounted on 12-foot granite posts; the face is composite material with applied letters. The town’s Department of Public Works plans to install the sign if the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (DOT) returns the required maintenance agreement.
The sign project was funded entirely by local donations and coordinated with Alton Signs. At the hearing, the board noted the DOT maintenance agreement remained outstanding; DPW told the board DOT had the paperwork and the town hoped to have the agreement returned in time for installation before the July Fourth weekend. The board also voted to establish a trust fund to accept any funds raised beyond the sign’s cost and to use those proceeds for future maintenance and upkeep.
During the public hearing, a resident praised Ruth Asinal for leading fundraising and coordination. Town staff described the materials as a composite sign face with granite posts and black metal brackets; the letters are applied rather than carved.
Outcome: The board’s motions to accept the sign and to establish a maintenance trust fund both passed by voice vote. The installation remains contingent on the DOT maintenance agreement being returned to the town.
