Board renews SAIL charter for five years after staff recommendation

Pomona Unified School District staff recommended approval of the renewal petition for the School of Extended Educational Options (SAIL) and trustees voted 5-0 to renew the charter for five years at the June 25 meeting.
Staff reported that SAIL serves about 1,169 students across TK-12 in four independent programs including alternative education and partnerships. The staff analysis reviewed the charters required elements under Education Code 47605 and concluded the petition provided reasonable, comprehensive descriptions for the 15 required elements, including educational program, measurable outcomes, governance, health and safety, financial planning, and closure procedures. Based on that review, staff recommended a five-year renewal under a middle-performing standard and asked the board to adopt Resolution No. 28 (24-25) to approve the renewal.
Trustees asked about the criteria distinguishing a high-performing versus a middle-performing status; staff said SAIL had shown improvement on CAS data but the results were not yet at the level that would warrant a high-performing designation. Staff also noted some data were embargoed pending state release.
After discussion, the board moved to approve the staff recommendation and adopted the renewal by unanimous vote. Staff noted the charters renewal would cover the five-year period beginning July 1, 2025, and that more detailed staff analysis appears in the board packet for public review.
